In Moldova you can drive on your valid licence if it is recognised on a reciprocal basis. Speed limits are 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h outside them and 110 km/h on roads marked with the motorway sign. Over 0.3 g/l of alcohol in the blood is an offence, over 0.7 g/l is a crime, and phones may be used only hands-free.
Driving licence
People living in other countries and staying temporarily in Moldova may drive if their licence is recognised on a reciprocal basis (point 103). If your licence is not in Latin letters or you are not sure it is recognised, also bring an International Driving Permit. To rent from LilRent you also need at least 2 years of driving experience.
Speed limits
| Where | Limit |
|---|---|
| In towns and villages | 50 km/h |
| Near schools, hospitals, parks, historic centres | 30 km/h |
| Residential zones | 20 km/h |
| Outside towns | 90 km/h |

Limits for passenger cars under point 47 of the Regulation. Road signs take priority.
Alcohol
Driving with more than 0.3 g/l of alcohol in the blood (0.15 mg/l in exhaled air) is an offence, and more than 0.7 g/l (0.35 mg/l) is a crime. Our advice is simple: if you drink, do not drive.
Phone, seat belts, children
- Phone calls while driving are allowed only with a hands-free device (point 14)
- The driver and all passengers wear seat belts (points 11 and 84)
- Children up to 12: a suitable restraint and not in the front seat (points 82-83)
- Dipped headlights in daytime are required only for some vehicles (motorcycles, novice drivers and others, point 34), but we recommend them outside towns
Documents to carry
- Your driving licence
- Your ID card or passport
- The registration certificate and rental contract, which we hand over with the car
A LilRent car needs no vignette: the cars have Moldovan plates.
If you have an accident
After an accident with material damage only, the Regulation requires you to call the police straight away (point 13). In a LilRent car, call us immediately too: 24/7 assistance helps you with the next steps.
